Pediatric Eczema

What is Eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, effects up to 30% of children and 3% of adults, according to current estimates. It is a very common allergic skin disorder that typically appears as an itchy, red, inflamed rash. Eczema may cause the skin to swell, crack, crust over or scale.

Although eczema can occur at any age, some estimates show that up to 70% of cases begin in children under the age of five.

Eczema tends to be hereditary, so it’s common for more than one family member to exhibit symptoms. Eczema is also thought to be linked to asthma and hay fever (allergic rhinitis) later in life (1, 2). In fact, children who suffer from atopic dermatitis often have more severe asthma than children who don’t (3).

Conventional Treatment

Conventional treatment of eczema generally includes the use of topical steroids like hydrocortisone cream, oral antihistamine drugs to control itching, and sometimes immuno-suppressant drugs.

While these treatments can be helpful for temporarily suppressing the symptoms, they are like a Band-Aid that doesn’t provide a permanent resolution of the problem.

Homeopathic Treatment

Homeopathy is a safe, gentle, yet extremely effective treatment for eczema that is suitable for infants, children and adults. Homeopathic medicines are natural and completely individualized for each patient based on his or her medical history and symptoms.

Many patients report an improvement in their eczema symptoms within days, with rashes often disappearing altogether in a few months.

A study published in January 2012 found that 82% of patients with mild to severe eczema had a positive response to homeopathic treatment (4). A second study published at the same time found that 70% of patients treated with homeopathy had a complete disappearance of symptoms eight years later, showing that homeopathy is effective long-term (5).

Case Study: Eczema

David was a 3-year-old boy with chronic nasal allergies and a fiery red, insatiably itching eczema rash on the backs of his legs that recurred time and time again, despite repeated treatment with hydrocortisone steroid cream.

After starting homeopathic treatment, his mother reported that his stuffy nose and allergies went away within a few days of starting the remedy and the rash began to improve after a few weeks. Within 2 months of treatment the rash was gone. It’s now been almost a year since that rash last cropped up and it hasn’t returned. David is a happy, healthy preschooler!
