Prescription for fruits and veggies

The percentage of the American population that are said to be on prescription medication is said to be at about 70%. This shocking number will hopefully see some relief as a new program is launching into medical centers across the nation. The Fruit and Vegetable Program is designed to educate the public about the actions they can take in their health, starting with using food as their medicine. “Health Bucks” are prescribed to patients that can be redeemed at local farmer’s markets. The goal is to support the public in discovering the medicinal properties of food as the vitamins and nutrients help the body to heal and perform at its ultimate peak. Below are a few examples of foods and their healing properties:

Leafy Greens
The fiber and vitamins in leafy greens help cleanse your digestive tract which is the primary source for the breaking down of food into nutrients which the body uses for energy, growth and cellular repair.

Berries
The ultimate anti-aging superfood! Berries are high in antioxidants which can fight oxidative stress caused by free radicals and even lead to disease. Berries can reduce inflammation and protect your cellular health.

Red, Orange and Yellow Veggies
These veggies contain carotenoids that are powerful antioxidants that can prevent some forms of cancer and heart disease. These veggies are excellent for the skin due to their high content of Vitamin A.

Avocado
This fruit has the perfect combination for your brain as it is packed with folates, omega-3’s and Vitamin E.

Cruciferous Vegetables
Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, kale and bok choy are high in phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals and fiber. They contain high levels of cancer fighting properties which can lower your cancer risk when consumed regularly.

Garlic and Onion
Garlic and onion contain natural chemicals that can fight off infections and heal the human body. They have been shown to lower cholesterol and fight a number of bacteria and viruses.
